In addition to its famous tourist complex, Castellana Grotte has underground treasures in its rural areas and even in the town centre. In 2011, a karstic cavity was discovered and renamed the Grotte dell’Abate Eustasio (Abbot Eustasio Caves), which could become a new attraction for nature lovers in the near future.

The oldest record of Castellana dates back to 901. But it is from 1771 that the Castellana land increased the number of its inhabitants due to the donation by the Abbot Eustasio to Nicola and Costa from Otranto. Over the years this territory has seen several feudal lords until, in 1750, the inhabitants started an anti-feudal struggle.
